J. M. Culberson
A life-long resident of Shannon community, J.M. and his wife, Edna, are still active in the community. J.M. is presently in the Rome-Floyd County Sports Hall of Fame. Graduated from Model High School and later attended Darlington School (Prep School at that time).
- Football
- Known as best kicker in Darlington's history and an excellent passer. Set a passing record in 1941 that still stood in 2000.
- One of the leading scorers in the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Association and was named to All Mid-South Football Team. He acquired the name "Long Run" Culberson.
- Accepted scholarship to the University of North Carolina.
- Named to All-Southern Conference Freshman Football Team.
- Basketball
- Named to the All-Star Tourney Team by the Chatanooga Times and listed among the tournament's leading scorers.
- Baseball
- Named to the All-South Baseball Team while at Darlington.
- Leading hitter for the Brighton Mills' Orphans (Textile League).
- Played every position except catcher on the Brighton team. Newspaper quoted as saying he was without a doubt the best all-around player to ever don a Brighton uniform.
- Opportunity to try out with the Atlanta Baseball Club, but opted to go the Univwersity of North Carolina on a football scholarship.
- In 1946 The Red Sox organization (brother Leon played on the team) wanted him to work out with the team. Played the entire pre-season for the Red Sox.
- Most consider baseball to be his best sport and what he is most remembered by.
- Served in the Army for 3 1/2 years.
Joan Jones
Joan Jones
Became coach and teacher at Model High School in 1952 leading students in junior high, junior varsity and varsity basketball.
- In 1956 she moved to Model Junior High School coaching basketball, track and softball until the state of Georgia ruled out all junior high athletic programs in 1961.
- She spent 24 years as a volunteer coach with the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority winning over 15 local basketball championships, five Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District All-Star titles and three GRPA State All-Star titles for the 12 and 14 and under age groups
- She also coached track for ages 10-14 and led many girls to victories qualifying berths for Distract and State meets.
- In softball, four local 12 and Under Championships were won under his direction.
- In 1992 she led her team to the local championship and finished runner-up with her District All-Stars. These players continued to play as a team from the Model area and went on to stage competition and one Final Four after entering high school competition.
- Joan Jones has received numerous awards for her dedication to coaching including Recreation Authority Youth-Sport-Coach-Of-The-Year in 1982, the 30-year Award from Scorebook in 1992-93 and the Etowah High School Sports Hall of Fame honor in 1983.

Model High School 1942-1946
Graduated in May 1946 at age 16...President of Senior Class
- Earned a letter in four sports, football (only year Model had football), basketball 4 years, baseball 4 years, track 4 years. Played on Model's first football team in 1945 playing offensive and defensive end every minute of every game for the season catching at least one touchdown pass in each game during season.
- Was Co-Captain of the team.
- Starter on basketball team for three years, captain senior year. Was usually 1st or 2nd high point player in most games.
- Played several positions in baseball, pitcher, shortstop, and outfield. Leading hitter on the team.
- Was member of Brighton team in Northwest Georgia Textile League beginning in summer of 1944.
- In track, ran sprints, relays and broad jump winning several events in track meets.
- Ran 10.0 second 100 yard dash at least once.
- Won second place in broad jump in state track meet in both 1945 and 1946.
- Named "Best Boy Athlete" at Model in 1945-46.
- Offered a minor league baseball contract by St. Louis Cardinals upon completion of high school in 1946. Declined because he would have been ineligible to compete in any sports in college.
- Played end on West Georgia College football team in 1947.
- Began playing fro Brighton in the Northwest Georgia Textile League. In 1944 at the age of 14 (turned 15 in July). Had .300 batting average for the season. Played for Brighton 1944-47, for Anchor Rome in 1948, for Lindale in 1949 and for Brighton again in 1950-42.
- During military service from 1953-54 played Division level baseball for 5th division Artillery in Southern Germany. Played end (mostly defense) in football for 5th division Artillery in 1953.
- Refereed military division level basketball games all over Southern Germany during the 1953-54 season. Was presented a Commendation for "superior ability" and "fine accomplishment" during the 1953-54 athletic seasons in baseball and football.
- Served as Co-coach, along with Sam Talley, of the Shannon Little League All-stars to win over the National League All-Stars.
- Coached at Model 1945-50, 1951-52 and 1954-55 as an assistant football coach in football, varsity baseball, varsity track. Also, coached varsity girls' basketball at various times.
- As an administrator (principal) was responsible for interviewing, selecting and recommending coaches to the superintendent of Schools for approval by the Board of Education. Had overall supervision of the athletic program. As Superintendent, responsible for approval and recommendation of coaches for Board approval including responsibility for developing system budgeting coaches' salary supplements, facilities, equipment, etc. for school athletic programs.

- Four-year letterman in basketball and one-year letterman in track
- Three-year starter in basketball
- 1988-89 was starting point guard averaging 12 points per game. Named to Rome
News Honorable Mention All-Area - 1988-89 averaged 21 points per game and Named Rome News-Tribune All-Area.
- 1990-91 averaged 34 points per game (39.0 per game after Christmas). Scored 51 in a game in a game vs SE Whitfield (8 three pointers). Team leader in assists and rebounds guiding the Blue Devils to a state tournament appearance (took only region winners and runners-up at the time) since 1976.
- Named All State AA, Rome News Tribune All Area Player of the Year, Northwest GA. Tip Off Player of the Year, Selected to North/South All Star team, Atlanta Journal Constitution Super Senior team (top ten seniors in the state). Finished high school career with over 1800 points.
- Began college career at Gordon Junior College when he was named to the Junior College State Team of the Year. Transferred to Southern Union College where he was named Alabama Junior.
- College Tournament MVP after leading SU to state runner-up (recruited by Auburn, Lamar University, University of Miami among others).
- Signed with the University of New Orleans and started for two years.
- Finished at UNO as one of the top career leaders in steals despite playing only two Seasons.
- Named the Sun Belt Championship and NCAA berth where they were defeated by the University of North Carolina.
- Played professional for 15 seasons in Israel, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Argentina.
- Won numerous league honors.
- Played semiprofessionally in the United States for several teams.

- Averaged 26 points per game and 13 rebounds per game her senior year

- Berry College and was a four year starter for the Lady Vikings. At one point she held the scoring record for the women’s basketball team
- Three year participant in track, 400 meter, 200 meter, 4x400 meter and long jump
- Never lost a race in the 400 meters except for the two state finals finishing 6th and 4th
- Completed her degree at Berry College and is now employed by State Farm Insurance Agency

- Lifelong resident of Shannon community. Married to Pam Jones and they have two children, Clint and Lindsay. Albert spent most of his professional life teaching and coaching at Model, with few years serving as Principal at Armuchee Middle School.

- Named MVP in football senior year.

- Signed baseball scholarship with Shorter College in 1974
- Received the "Bad-Eye Lindsey" scholarship from old textile League players and organization.
- 4 years starter at Shorter College in baseball with .286 batting average, 20 Homeruns, and 98 runs batted in, career fielding percentage of .948, played on tour Conference championship teams and holds Shorter baseball records with 36 base on balls in a season and 8 runs batted in a single game.
